SUMMARY:Fruit Tree Pruning Demo
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in learning how to help your fruit trees thrive? \n \nJoin 7 Lakes Alliance on Sunday\, April 26th at our Homestead Property with local arborist Aaron Charpentier to learn about the art of tree pruning and to have a hands-on opportunity to practice best management of fruit trees. \nBeginning his career in firewood\, Aaron found a passion for species identification which has since taken root and sprouted many seedlings\,  both personally and professionally. His care and attention to tree health and management has helped him to become a foreman at one of the largest tree companies in the area\, and has also helped him attain private arborist licensing. This allows him to express his devotion to his craft by helping local businesses and homeowners deal with problem trees in a variety of ways. His love of arboriculture makes him the perfect instructor to demonstrate his industry-backed techniques used to maintain fruit trees and prevent damage and overgrowth. \n  \nWhat to bring: \nBring a rake or hand rake\, gloves\, pruners\, if you have them and all your tree questions for this enthusiastic expert! \nWhere to meet: \nMeet 7 Lakes Alliance staff at the Round Top parking lot located near the corner of Watson Pond Road and Wildflower Estates\, 4 miles south of Watson Pond Road’s junction with Route 27. From here we will cross Watson Pond Road and walk 0.3 miles down the access road to our Homestead Nature Education property. \nEvent Policies \n\nWe ask everyone attending 7 Lakes Alliance events to treat people\, plants\, and animals with respect.\n7 Lakes staff may be taking pictures during this event. If you would not like to be photographed\, please let staff know during the event or contact staff ahead of time.\nSafety is our primary concern. If you are acting in an unsafe way\, 7 Lakes Alliance will ask you to leave the event.\nPets will not be allowed at this event.

SUMMARY:Live Staking Demo with MFS - Conservation Stewardship Simplified
DESCRIPTION:Join the Maine Forest Service to learn about live stakes as a tool for erosion control and conservation. \nLive staking is a propagation method using cuttings from dormant trees or shrubs.\nAbout the Event\nJared Gregory\, District Forester from the Maine Forest Service\, will lead a demonstration on the techniques for harvesting and installing live stakes for conservation and erosion control. We are hosting the event on French Mountain\, where we will be remedying an active erosion site along the hiking trail. \n\nLearn to properly install and maintain live stakes\nLearn which species will propagate from cuttings and identifying healthy parent plants.\n\nWhat to Expect\n\nWe will be walking to the erosion site and in the forest to find parent plants.\nThe event may last up to 2 hours\, depending on the abundance of parent plants.\n\nParking\nParking at the trail head is limited\, please consider carpooling from the Rome Park-and-Ride. \nThis event is a collaboration between 7 Lakes Alliance\, Maine Forest Service (MFS)\, and the Kennebec County Soil & Water Conservation District (KCSWCD). \nFor questions about the venue\, parking\, or 7 Lakes Alliance programs contact sally.whittington@7lakesalliance.org.

SUMMARY:Stream & Marsh Explorers Field Training
DESCRIPTION:We are collaborating with Maine Audubon to host a training on critters that live in freshwater streams! \n \nLocation: Wings Mills Dam \nCurious about what critters live in your local streams and freshwater marshes? Come join Maine Audubon and Maine DEP for a fun morning of catching and identifying macroinvertebrates at Wings Mills Dam in Belgrade hosted by 7 Lakes Alliance! Get hands-on training and learn how you can contribute to an important community science project that acts as a screening tool for Maine’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) water quality assessments. Be prepared to wade into shallow water as you net and handle macroinvertebrates! \nFor more information and to register for this event\, click the button below. \n \n Register Here

SUMMARY:Shoreline Erosion Stabilization Practices using OUR SHORE
DESCRIPTION:Earn 4 Continuing Education Credits for completing this training run by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. \n\nAbout the Event\nSoil erosion is not only a source of nonpoint source pollution\, but it can also threaten structures and other development. Historically\, there was a single approach to shoreline erosion: fill the shoreline with rock or riprap without regard to the ecological functions of the shoreline. While this approach has been successful in solving some erosion challenges when done correctly\, it creates other problems for waterbodies and wildlife. This training introduces participants to resources and alternative approaches to protecting water quality and habitat to create resilient and stable shorelines. Criteria for choosing appropriate shoreland BMPs or bioengineering solutions include practices that cause minimal disturbance while providing maximum benefit. A combination of several techniques can often be used to ensure that the best practices chosen are suited to the specific site. \nEvent organized in partnership with 30 Mile River Watershed Association. \n  \nWhat to Expect\n\n$25 registration fee (covers refreshments and facility rental)\n\npay ahead of time by calling 207-495-6039\, or pay by cash or check day-of the event\nmake checks payable to 7 Lakes Alliance\n\n\nCoffee and snacks will be provided all day\n\nParking\nThis program will be run at the 7 Lakes Alliance building located at 137 Main Street\, Belgrade\, ME 04917. Our parking area is limited and alternative parking can be found along Main Street\, as well as at the Village Green parking area (Across from the Sunset Grill located at 1214 West Road\, Belgrade). \nContact\nThis training is provided by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection Non-Point Source Training Center. For questions specific to material of the training contact Jordan Kimball (jordan.kimball@maine.gov)\, Non-Point Source Training Center Assistant Coordinator for the Department of Environmental Protection. \nFor questions about the venue\, parking\, or 7 Lakes Alliance programs contact Sally Whittington (sally.whittington@7lakesalliance.org) Community Engagement Coordinator for 7 Lakes Alliance. \n
