DESCRIPTION:Earn 4 Continuing Education Credits for completing this training run by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. \nYouth Conservation Corps staff tending to a buffer garden \nAbout the Event\nSoil erosion is not only a source of nonpoint source pollution\, but it can also threaten structures and other development. Historically\, there was a single approach to shoreline erosion: fill the shoreline with rock or riprap without regard to the ecological functions of the shoreline. While this approach has been successful in solving some erosion challenges when done correctly\, it creates other problems for waterbodies and wildlife. This training introduces participants to resources and alternative approaches to protecting water quality and habitat to create resilient and stable shorelines. Criteria for choosing appropriate shoreland BMPs or bioengineering solutions include practices that cause minimal disturbance while providing maximum benefit. DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: Due to a forecast of 80% cloud cover tonight\, this event has been moved inside and will be held on Monday\, July 6th at 8pm at 137 Main Street\, Belgrade. \nLook up and experience the beauty of Maine’s dark skies during this guided Night Sky Tour in Rome\, Maine. \nMilky Way Galaxy over Vienna Mountain Blueberry Barrens by John Meader \nAstronomer\, educator\, and Maine State Guide John Meader will lead lead us through a tour of that evening’s constellations\, stars\, visible planets\, and the Milky Way. Participants will learn the wonders of what they can see with their eyes alone. We often see meteors (shooting stars)\, satellites\, and sometimes the aurora borealis (northern lights). John routinely shares some skyline\, astronomy news\, a discussion of ways to fight light pollution\, and will answer all your questions to be best of his ability. \nPoor weather plan: Night Sky Tours are very tricky to plan\, as the sky conditions are always changing! If the sky is not clear enough\, John will host a virtual guided star tour at the 7 Lakes Alliance building at 137 Main Street in Belgrade on the same night. DESCRIPTION:Explore the wildlife of a protected bog in Mercer! \nMercer Bog \nJoin us for a paddle on Mercer Bog Stream\, a 371 acre Wildlife Management area that has open\, shallow water perfect for kayaking and canoeing. Along the edge of fresh meadow\, marsh and swamp areas\, we’ll see waterfowl\, turtles\, and interesting aquatic plants.  Put-in will be near a small dam in Mercer\, then we’ll paddle into the open water and up into the small stream and back. \nParking\nMeet at the Mercer Historical Society\, located at 77 Main Street\, Mercer\, ME 04957. This program\, led by LakeSmart and Friends of Messalonskee representative Janna Townsend\, will follow the shoreline of Messalonskee Lake\, looking at properties that have received a LakeSmart award and discussing the importance of reducing erosion into the lakes. \n \nLakeSmart\nLakeSmart is a state-wide education and outreach program that promotes managing lakefront properties in a water quality friendly manor. DESCRIPTION:All aboard the Floating Classroom to learn about our loons! \n \nEnjoy some time on the water and some time talking about loons with Maine Master Naturalist and Loon Restoration Project Volunteer Susan Cottle.  Perhaps we’ll espy (from a safe distance!) or hear the call of one of our loon friends while we are out.  But we will certainly talk about their lives\, what causes problems for them\, and how we can help them as we enjoy being on Great Pond. \n  \nMeeting Location\nThis program will meet at 7 Lakes Alliance\, 137 Main Street\, Belgrade\, ME 04917. Here\, we will gather and review our destination\, board the 7 Lakes Alliance Floating Classroom (22 ft pontoon boat)\, and venture out onto Great Pond.
