SUMMARY:Winter Tree Identification Walk
DESCRIPTION:General description: \nTake a walk with Maine Master Naturalist Liz Koucky\, and learn how to identify trees in their winter state. Identifying trees from their leaves is a valuable skill\, but when leaves drop in the fall\, things can get tricky. Our trek will include varied landscape communities within a short walking distance\, including ash stands\, red maple\, oak\, birch\, pine\, scattered balsam and hemlock. Please register for this event using the button above. \nThe rain/weather date for this event is March 1st at 10:00 AM. \nMeeting Location: \nUPDATE: AS OF 1/22/25 THE MEETING LOCATION HAS BEEN MOVED TO THE LOWER MT. PHILLIP PARKING LOT. \nMeet at the Mt. Phillip lower parking lot in Rome\, located on the north side of Route 225\, approximately 0.2 miles south west of Starbird Lane\, and 1.3 miles east of Rome Corner (the junction of Routes 27 and 225). Overflow parking will be available at the upper parking lot directly across from Starbird Lane. See attached map for details. \nHike Description: \nWe will start from the Mt. Phillip lower trailhead\, and walk up the trail\, across a few bridges\, towards the upper parking lot. We will then continue counter clockwise up the main trail and explore the variety of forest communities. We will turn around before reaching the summit\, and head back towards the parking lots. This trail includes rocks\, roots\, and bridges and will potentially be snow-covered. The overall distance for this hike is approximately 1.0-1.5 miles\, and the event will take approximately 1-1.5 hours depending on the group. \n \n Mt. Philip Trail PDF \n\n  \nRecommended Gear: \n\nWarm layers. We will be walking and stopping to investigate different trees\, be sure to dress for the weather.\nHiking/trekking poles can be helpful when walking on snow and uneven surfaces. They are especially useful when the trail is hidden by snow or for off-trail exploring.\nDepending on weather\, we may recommend snowshoes or micro-spikes. An email will be sent to registrants before the event with an update on trail conditions.\n\n*7 Lakes has 2 adult pairs of snowshoes and 2 child pairs of snowshoes available to borrow. Please email sally.whittington@7lakesalliance.org to reserve snowshoes for this event.\n\n\n\nEvent Policies \n\nWe ask everyone attending 7 Lakes events to treat people\, plants\, and animals with respect.\n7 Lakes staff will be taking pictures during this event. If you would not like to be photographed\, please let staff know during the event or contact sally.whittington@7lakesalliance.org ahead of time.

SUMMARY:Big Night Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Every spring\, conditions come together to form one of the most eruptive wildlife migrations in the world – right in our backyards. The warm\, rainy nights of spring bring frogs and salamanders out in droves\, creating what is referred to as “big nights”. However\, many of these migrants face trouble as they meet one of the newest habitats on the landscape – roads. This talk will review the ecology of big nights\, the impacts of roads on wildlife\, and how you can get involved through the statewide and nationally recognized Maine Big Night program. \n\nThis spring\, 7 Lake will become a local hub for Big Night\, and will have kits prepared for volunteers to help amphibians cross the road safely. We are hosting this presentation from Maine Big Night so our audience can learn about amphibian migration and how you can do your part to protect these creatures. \n\nThis presentation will be available in person at 7 Lakes Alliance located at 137 Main Street\, Belgrade 04917\, and available on Zoom at the following link: \nTopic: Maine Big Night Presentation\nTime: Mar 10\, 2025 05:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/84110141581?pwd=auGaGy5nPDmKLRvZFWh5u1rViStNyY.1 \nMeeting ID: 841 1014 1581\nPasscode: 019859 \nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kEWlueZLr \n

SUMMARY:Poetry Afloat
DESCRIPTION:Join local poet Doug “Woody” Woodsum on 7 Lakes Alliance’s education boat for Poetry Afloat!\nJoin local poet Doug “Woody” Woodsum to learn about nature poetry and to write some of your own. SUMMARY:McGrath Pond Plant Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Want to join the battle against invasive aquatic plants\, or just looking to paddle on a new lake or pond? \nJoin our volunteer-powered team to help survey the shoreline for invasive (and native) aquatic plants. Each group of volunteers is paired with a person who is certified in aquatic plant identification. You can use a kayak\, canoe\, paddleboard\, small motorboat\, or even snorkel! Plant paddles are a great way to spend a morning paddling in the sunshine while doing a service to the lake. \nFeel free to sign up for paddles on a different lake than your own! Each of the Belgrade Lakes is beautiful and offers it’s own unique features that are worthy of protection! \nIf you are unable to participate in a paddle due to mobility issues or other restrictions\, please consider “donating” your camp or drive way for an afternoon. We can survey much more shoreline if we are able to park and launch paddle craft from a variety of locations. \n  \n \n Register Here \n\n  \nPlease direct any questions about this event to our Invasive Aquatics Program Director Sharon Mann at sharon.mann@7lakesalliance.org.
