SUMMARY:Chewonki: Bats of the World
DESCRIPTION:Bats comprise nearly one-quarter of the world’s approximately 4\,000 mammal species\, yet humans continue to fear and misunderstand them. Bats do so much to help us survive\, but now they need our help. Chewonki’s engaging presentation and interactive demonstration\, will introduce participants to the role bats play in ecosystems ranging from the Maine woods to the South American rainforests\, to help dispel common myths about these flying mammals. DESCRIPTION:Join 7 Lakes Alliance for a day of trail maintenance on our scenic Hoyt Island Preserve. \n \nParticipants will enjoy a boat ride across Great Pond on the 7 Lakes Education Boat\, then commence work on Hoyt Island\, clearing a walking path on the western side of the property. Tasks will include cutting brush\, clearing blowdown\, and smoothing trail surface. SUMMARY:Fun with Ferns on Mt. Phillip
DESCRIPTION:Have fun learning all about ferns on the Mt. Phillip trail. \nBridge bordered by ferns \nJoin Maine Master Naturalist Deb Stahler to learn about the wonders of ferns. This walk will start at the Mt. Phillip Lower Trailhead and will follow the connector trail between the Upper and Lower trailheads. This area is wet\, which ferns appreciate\, so dress appropriately. We will be on level ground\, and on board walks\, and walking fairly slowly to fully appreciate the nature around us. Ferns are some of our oldest vascular plants and there are about 60 different species in Maine\, and will encounter a few common species on this walk. Deb Stahler graduated from the Maine Master Naturalist Program in 2020 and has been leading walks since then. \n  \nParking\nMeet at the Mt. Phillip Lower Trailhead on route 225\, just a quarter mile south west of the Mt. This paddle will be approximately two hours and will stay along the shoreline. DESCRIPTION:Oh if trees could talk! \n \nPlease join us for a walk and talk about trees along the Blaisdell Trail on in Rome. Led by Maine Master Naturalist Susan Cottle\, the out and back walk will provide the opportunity to look at the forest landscape\, consider what we can tell from the lay of the land about its history and makeup\, and think about the infinite ways in which trees affect virtually every other living thing. And\, of course\, we’ll surely do some tree ID along the way as we talk about ways to look at trees\, how they live\, and what we might notice about them that we haven’t before. \nParking\nWe will be meeting at the Quill Hill parking lot located on Drury Lane in Rome\, just north of the intersection of routes 27 and 225. \n		\n			Directions & Trail Map		\n\n  \nEvent Policies\n\nWe ask everyone attending 7 Lakes Alliance events to treat people\, plants\, and animals with respect.\n7 Lakes staff may be taking pictures during this event.
