DESCRIPTION:Earn 4 Continuing Education Credits for completing this training run by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. \nYouth Conservation Corps staff tending to a buffer garden \nAbout the Event\nSoil erosion is not only a source of nonpoint source pollution\, but it can also threaten structures and other development. Historically\, there was a single approach to shoreline erosion: fill the shoreline with rock or riprap without regard to the ecological functions of the shoreline. While this approach has been successful in solving some erosion challenges when done correctly\, it creates other problems for waterbodies and wildlife. This training introduces participants to resources and alternative approaches to protecting water quality and habitat to create resilient and stable shorelines. Criteria for choosing appropriate shoreland BMPs or bioengineering solutions include practices that cause minimal disturbance while providing maximum benefit. Tree plantings will be divided into three zones: Wind throw mitigation\, climate resilient native trees\, and assisted migration plots. We welcome people of all experience levels to join us\, but all participants must be able to walk short distances over uneven surfaces. \nParticipants should bring: \n\nFood and water\nGloves\nClose-toed shoes\nAppropriate clothes to work outside\nIf you have one\, please bring a shovel\, as we have a limited number to give out.\n\nParking\nPark at the Belgrade Transfer Station in the parking area to the left of the gate. DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in learning how to help your fruit trees thrive? \n \nJoin 7 Lakes Alliance on Sunday\, April 26th at our Homestead Property with local arborist Aaron Charpentier to learn about the art of tree pruning and to have a hands-on opportunity to practice best management of fruit trees. \nBeginning his career in firewood\, Aaron found a passion for species identification which has since taken root and sprouted many seedlings\,  both personally and professionally. His care and attention to tree health and management has helped him to become a foreman at one of the largest tree companies in the area\, and has also helped him attain private arborist licensing. This allows him to express his devotion to his craft by helping local businesses and homeowners deal with problem trees in a variety of ways. SUMMARY:Become a Big Night Volunteer
DESCRIPTION:Want to help facilitate one of the biggest migrations in the world? Join this citizen science project in counting and recording amphibians as they migrate from their winter habitats to their spring breeding grounds. \n \nA “big night” is a remarkable and critical event in the life cycle of amphibians. It refers to the evening when certain amphibian species\, driven by environmental cues like temperature and rainfall\, embark on a mass migration from their winter habitats to breeding grounds. This spectacle often involves large numbers of amphibians\, making it a captivating and significant occurrence in nature. \nWhen a “big night” occurs\, volunteers report to their selected monitoring site and record data on amphibian migrations and help them cross roads when they can. This data informs research projects\, and helps us understand how humans are impacting amphibian migration. \nHow Does a “Big Night” Work\nWhile the term “big night” implies only one night when this event may occur\, it frequently occurs multiple times per year. In Maine\, big nights tend to occur in early to mid April for most of the state. The triggers are mostly thawed ground\, nighttime temperatures above forty degrees (the warmer\, the better!)\, and enough precipitation to make the ground wet. \nHow to Participate\nRegister for the event: We will email all Big Night registrants when a “big night” is going to occur. We typically know within a day or two of a “big night” date. Register for this event above\, and make sure to sign the waiver below. \n		\n			Sign Waiver Here		\n\nFollow email instructions: When a “big night” is expected\, volunteers will receive an email with details on when and where 7 Lakes Alliance staff will be stationed at the monitoring site. \nWhat to bring: 7 Lakes Alliance staff will bring monitoring kits. Kits include reflective vests\, headlamps\, amphibian ID cards\, data entry forms\, and reflective signs for the road to alert oncoming traffic. Participants should dress according to the weather\, and bring a headlamp/flashlight if they have one. All other gear will be provided. \n\nGo the Extra Mile\n7 Lakes Alliance staff members have completed the Volunteer Certification and will act as the site hosts. If you would like to take the extra step and get certified yourself\, you can do so here. \n  \nEvent Policies\n\nAll volunteers must sign the waiver linked above to participate in this activity\nChildren under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign the waiver\nChildren under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult\nPets will not be allowed at this event

DESCRIPTION:Join us at our Homestead Property for a family-friendly day of cross-country skiing (or snowshoeing)! Chat with 7 Lakes Alliance staff by the fire pit\, and drink some hot cocoa to warm up between laps. This is the perfect time to check out our newest trail\, enjoy conserved land\, and meet some of the 7 Lakes Alliance team! Please note\, gear is not provided. \n \nMeeting Location:\nPlease park at the Round Top Trailhead and from here\, 7 Lakes Alliance staff will guide you across Watson Pond Road to the access road that takes you to the Homestead Property. Round Top Trailhead directions: the trailhead parking lot is located near the corner of Watson Pond Road and Wildflower Estates\, 4 miles south of Watson Pond Road’s junction with Route 27. \n\nSki Route Description:\nThe ski route will be focused around the new Homestead Trail (0.3 miles)\, as well as around the field of the Homestead Property. Folks are welcome to ski down the access road\, however some may choose to snowshoe down the small hill at the beginning of the access road. Note that the access road serves as a snowmobile trail in the winter\, however the main ski/snowshoe trail is not open to snowmobiles. Signs will be placed at visible intersections to alert snowmobiles of an event occurring. \n		\n			Homestead Property Map		\n\n\nRecommended Gear:\n\nDress in warm layers and be prepared for the weather\nWear clothes to ski in and bring a heavier jacket for hanging out by the fire\nBring your own skis or snowshoes\nBring your own mug so we can fill it with hot cocoa!\n\n* 7 Lakes has 4 adult pairs of snowshoes and 2 child pairs of snowshoes available to borrow. SUMMARY:Winter Tree Identification Walk
DESCRIPTION:Take a walk with Maine Master Naturalist Liz Koucky\, and learn how to identify trees in their winter state. Identifying trees from their leaves is a valuable skill\, but when leaves drop in the fall\, things can get tricky. Pick up some tree identifying skills on this guided walk. \n \nOur trek will include varied landscape communities including oak\, maple\, white birch\, yellow birch\, ash\, white pine\, hemlock and scattered eastern hop-hornbeam. Please register for this event so we can have an accurate head count and notify you of any changes. \nThe snow/weather date for this event is February 7 at 10:00 AM. Folks who have registered for this event will get an email if we have to move the event to the snow date. \nMeeting Location:\nMeet at the Quill Hill parking lot located at 25 Drury Lane\, Rome. Drury Lane is just north of the intersection of Rt 27 & Rt 225 (Rome Corner). Head south on Drury Lane for 0.2 miles where you will see a 7 Lakes sign on the left. See attached map below for details. \nHike Description:\nWe will start from the Quill Hill trailhead\, and walk approximately 1 mile down the Blaisdell trail and then turn around. We will be stopping frequently to observe different trees and discuss them\, which may mean we don’t cover as much distance. The hike will be a total maximum distance of 2 miles\, with total elevation change of approximately 125 ft. This trail is usually well packed by hikers\, but weather conditions will determine the trail surface conditions. \n		\n			Quill Hill Trail Map		\n\n  \nRecommended Gear:\n\nDress in warm layers. We will be walking and stopping to investigate different trees\, be sure to dress for stopping often.\nHiking/trekking poles can be helpful when walking on snow and uneven surfaces. They are especially useful when the trail is hidden by snow or for off-trail exploring.\nThis trail tends to be well packed but depending on weather\, we may recommend snowshoes or micro-spikes. An email will be sent to registrants before the event with an update on trail conditions.\n7 Lakes has 2 adult pairs of snowshoes and 2 child pairs of snowshoes available to borrow.
