SUMMARY:Shoreline Erosion Stabilization Practices using OUR SHORE
DESCRIPTION:Earn 4 Continuing Education Credits for completing this training run by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. \nYouth Conservation Corps staff tending to a buffer garden \nAbout the Event\nSoil erosion is not only a source of nonpoint source pollution\, but it can also threaten structures and other development. Historically\, there was a single approach to shoreline erosion: fill the shoreline with rock or riprap without regard to the ecological functions of the shoreline. While this approach has been successful in solving some erosion challenges when done correctly\, it creates other problems for waterbodies and wildlife. This training introduces participants to resources and alternative approaches to protecting water quality and habitat to create resilient and stable shorelines. Criteria for choosing appropriate shoreland BMPs or bioengineering solutions include practices that cause minimal disturbance while providing maximum benefit. A combination of several techniques can often be used to ensure that the best practices chosen are suited to the specific site. \nEvent organized in partnership with 30 Mile River Watershed Association. \n  \nWhat to Expect\n\n$25 registration fee (covers refreshments and facility rental)\n\npay ahead of time by calling 207-495-6039\, or pay by cash\, card or check day-of the event\nmake checks payable to 7 Lakes Alliance\n\n\nCoffee and snacks will be provided all day\n\nParking\nThis program will be run at the 7 Lakes Alliance building located at 137 Main Street\, Belgrade\, ME 04917. Our parking area is limited and alternative parking can be found along Main Street\, as well as at the Village Green parking area (Across from the Sunset Grill located at 1214 West Road\, Belgrade). \nContact\nThis training is provided by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection Non-Point Source Training Center. For questions specific to material of the training contact Jordan Kimball (jordan.kimball@maine.gov)\, Non-Point Source Training Center Assistant Coordinator for the Department of Environmental Protection. \nFor questions about the venue\, parking\, or 7 Lakes Alliance programs contact Sally Whittington (sally.whittington@7lakesalliance.org) Community Engagement Coordinator for 7 Lakes Alliance. \n

SUMMARY:Poetry Afloat
DESCRIPTION:Join local poet Doug “Woody” Woodsum to learn about nature poetry and to write some of your own. Poetry and nature have gone hand in hand for centuries. Did you know that “imagery” in poetry involves all senses and not just sight? Use rhythm and rhyme\, or don’t. Use metaphors\, similes\, hyperbole\, personification\, puns\, or not. A two-line couplet or a three line haiku can earn you the title: Poet. This user friendly approach will help you out of your comfort zone\, if needed. Samples from famous poets will be provided\, and imitation is encouraged. 7 Lakes Alliance will provide everything you need\, however you are welcome to bring your own supplies. \nDoug “Woody” Woodsum has published poetry in Down East\, The Maine Sunday Telegram\, Yankee\, and dozens of literary journals across the country. His book is titled The Lawns of Lobstermen. \nSuggested age for this event: 12+ \nThe Floating Classroom has limited capacity so please register for this event below. If you have any questions about registration or this event\, please email sally.whittington@7lakesalliance.org. \n\nMeeting Location: This program will meet at 7 Lakes Alliance\, 137 Main Street\, Belgrade\, ME 04917. SUMMARY:Nature Journaling and Present Tense Poetry
DESCRIPTION:All aboard the 7 Lakes Alliance Floating Classroom for an emersion into present tense poetry and nature journaling! This program will be led by Maine Master Naturalists Liz Koucky and Sarah Carlson. \nPresent Tense Poetry is a way to notice and record moments of stillness and flow in the waters\, woods\, and sky all around us. These experiences often become metaphoric moments of connection within. Participants will explore how to integrate drawing and/or photography with words to capture and hold these connections. This may simply be for the sheer pleasure of doing so or for times when there might be a desire to remember and revisit such moments. \nLiz Koucky\, longtime resident of Rome\, is a retired teacher\, Stewardship Volunteer with 7 Lakes Alliance and Maine Master Naturalist.  All year long\, she enjoys exploring the wonderful woods and waters of the Belgrade Lakes region.
